Thames Water has sponsored this website to raise £200,000 to build a new pontoon at Farmoor Reservoir. It will allow easier access and more independence for the disabled when sailing. |

| At Farmoor Reservoir, people who have difficulty getting in and out of a boat can sail yachts that can be launched from the shore, even though helpers are needed in the shallow water.
Why We Need a New Pontoon
However, some boats that have being adapted for disabled sailors have deeper keels - to help them stay upright and less likely to capsize. These boats can't be launched from shallow water, but need a pontoon that allows them to be moored in deeper water. This pontoon needs to be secure enough for wheelchair users and for able bodied volunteers. The current floating pontoon at the reservoir does not provide this level of stability.
How Will it Help?
The new pontoon at Farmoor Reservoir will be the first of its type to be built in this country and we hope it will be replicated across the world as the benefits to disabled sailors become clear.
A special drop deck will provide a constant depth of water, to allow volunteers to help disabled sailors to moor up and disembark, regardless of the depth of water in the reservoir. It has been specially designed to protect the reservoir and to cope with large changes in water levels throughout the season, so that our sailors can carry on sailing.
